Seasons of China
二十四节气

Lichun (Chinese: 立春), or the Beginning of Spring as it is known, is the first of the 24 Solar Terms. It marks the starting point on the wheel of the four seasons when the world is all revived. Nowadays it was included on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Let’s go together with Dominic Johnson-Hill and experience the incredible Beginning of Spring in Shiqian, Guizhou province of China.

UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2016 URL: http://www.unesco.org/culture/ich/RL/... Description: To better understand the seasons, astronomy, and other natural phenomena the ancient Chinese looked at the sun’s circular motion and divided it into 24 segments called Solar Terms. The terms such as First Frost, based on observations of the environment, have been integrated into calendars as a timeframe for daily routines and production, being particularly important for farmers. Some folk festivities are associated with the terms, which have contributed to community cultural identity. Knowledge is transmitted in families and schools.
